Diabetes mellitus - type 1
Approximately one tenth of all diabetics suffer from this type of diabetes. It appears before the age of 40, most often in puberty. Onset of diabetes is sudden. Patient is hungry and thirsty, significantly more often urinates, observes loss of weight, often feels tired, may feel bellyache, changes in respiration and high level of glycemia is measured. This type of diabetes is characterized by total destruction of pancreatic cells producing insulin which therefore lacks in organism. Treatment comprises always lifelong supply of insulin, careful selfmonitoring of glycemia and reaction on measured values (selfmonitoring), discipline in diet, and adjustment of insulin doses during physical exertion.
